According to scientific studies, CBD has been shown to have several unique properties and have been rightly deployed in making many beneficial products for human consumption.
CBD oil is already a beloved substance in the marijuana market today. It effectively alleviates pain, manages insomnia, reduces stress and anxiety, takes care of inflammation, and treats skin conditions like acne and psoriasis.
But before we delve right into that, let’s understand how CBD is effective in managing skin conditions.
We already know that the human body is composed of an endocannabinoid system, otherwise known as the ECS. The ECS is responsible for coordinating and regulating body functions, such as sleeping, metabolism, mood, appetite, hunger, digestion, neural development, etc.
On the other hand, CBD is capable of influencing these body functions by binding to receptors in the ECS.The endocannabinoid system has receptors that bind CBD, which temporarily influences the body’s response to anxiety, pain, inflammation, psychosis, muscle spasms, and in more controlled situations, cardiovascular conditions, and diabetes.
So, because of the natural ability of CBD to bind with receptor sites in our body, it is capable of restoring the body to its optimum level of functionality. This is how CBD exerts its effect on the body, mainly when applied topically.
There are two primary methods of extracting CBD from cannabis: the oil method and the alcohol method. Here, we’ll explore the oil method for specific reasons; it is an easy and safe method and can be replicated at home with ease.
The body has access to some essential vitamins and minerals, flavonoids, and fatty acids through this method. And on top of it all, CBD, unlike THC, does not produce any psychoactive effect in the body.
- High-quality cannabis buds, leaves, and stem
- Coconut oil
- Mason jar
- A saucepan
- A pot
- An oven
- A hand grinder
- Cheesecloth or strainer
Note that you need to source for a high-quality cannabis strain, as the final product’s quality depends on that.
The procedure for extracting the oil is effortless and straightforward. Note that this process may take up to 8 hours or more. First, preheat the oven to 220°F. Then use the grinder to ground up the cannabis buds. Once this is done, place the ground cannabis on parchment paper, lined onto a baking sheet. Insert this into the oven. Bake the raw ground buds for about 1.5-2 hours at 220°F.
This first step is called decarboxylation of cannabis, and it is the most crucial step in the process. Essentially, what happens here is that the chemical CBD, responsible for the effect of CBD, is activated. Without doing this, whatever else you do next will only amount to a waste of time.
Next, turn off the heat in the oven and retrieve the decarboxylated cannabis buds. Now mix it with coconut oil or any other carrier oil of your choice. Here, you have the liberty to use any amount of oil you deem fit. However, use enough to saturate the weed and not in excess. Do the mixing in a mason jar. Ensure the mixture has a homogenous texture.
The next thing is to boil the oil–cbd mixture. Turn on the heat on the stove, then screw the mason jar’s lid securely to ensure no air escapes from it. Place a piece of cloth at the bottom of a saucepan, put the jar in it, and fill the pan with water, up to two-thirds of its capacity. Heat the water at 200°F for up to 3 hours. This should allow the cannabis–oil mixture to simmer in the jar.
Once the heating is over, allow the mixture to cool for another 3 hrs. Because of long hours of heating, always check to ensure the water has not evaporated. After letting the mixture sit for 3 hours, heat it again for another 3 hours. Once done, allow it to cool overnight. By the next day, your CBD oil is ready for use. You may then use the cheesecloth to strain out the oil into another container and store it in a cool, dry place.
Are There Any Side Effects of Using CBD Oil?
Given the remarkable benefits of CBD oil, you may wonder if there are any side effects from using CBD body products. Interestingly, CBD is well-tolerated. But as with several other kinds of medications, you may notice some side effects like diarrhea, dryness in the mouth, drowsiness, and fatigue.
CBD oil also has been shown to affect weight loss. More studies say that people who use CBD products are leaner, even though they consume way more calories than non-users. To a large extent, this observation is subject to further studies for more details.
